UUWH and Habitat for Humanity Blizt Build: by Karen Gold (5 August 2017)

Aloha members and friends,

I attended a planning meeting on Thursday at Habitat for Humanity for the Blitz Build. This is an event that takes place once every 5 years and is a huge undertaking. I will be coordinating volunteers from UUWH, so please let me know if you are interested. This is a great opportunity to get involved with Habitat and form an ongoing relationship.

Blitz Build is a project to build 10 homes for 10 families in 10 days from September 13th through 23rd. The houses are all HPM package 1056, which means that the floor plans and materials will be the same, but colors will be different. Foundations have already been poured and the names of the Ohana are on each lot. The building site is on Keanalehu Street at Aupaka Street, mauka of the West Hawaii Civic Center.

UUWH will be donating money from our Social Action Fund, and we will be recruiting volunteers to help. There are many different ways to support the Blitz Build. They need food and beverages for volunteers, people to serve food and clean up, as well as construction volunteers. Rotary is providing a 60 by 100 foot tent for hospitality (and shade.)

A group of 160 Blitz Build specialists from Habitat on the mainland will be here to help. Each house will have a site supervisor and 3 to 5 skilled construction leads. Local volunteers can come for a morning, an afternoon, a day, or several days.

Tuesday, September 12th 5:30 pm - Opening Ceremony with Island Breeze

Wednesday, September 13th through Friday September 15th – Walls, trusses and roofs raised

Saturday, September 16th – Exterior painting, expecting over 1,000 volunteers

Sunday, September 17th – Day of worship, no volunteers

Monday, September 18th through Friday September 22nd – Interior drywall, painting, fixtures

Saturday, September 23rd 12 noon – House blessings and Luau

The projected move-in date is November 1st. There will be a need for volunteers to help finish the interiors from the end of September through October. Target stores have generously sponsored the children’s bedrooms, donating furniture, bedding and decorations that will need to be assembled and set up.

Mahalo,

Karen

UUWH continues to support food and money donations to the Hawaii Food Basket. Many of us are also participating in the Kalikimaka No Na Keiki program (Christmas for the Children) offered by the Family Support Hawaii. As individuals we are involved in action ranging from environmental education to Habitat for Humanity to shelters for women and children.

The national Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) offers assistance with Social Action and also has a College of Social Justice.
